Matthew Rockett

Software Engineer — Zordi

About

I'm a Software and Robotics engineer based in the Boston area who specializes in creating software that enables robots to reliably perform complex planning and manipulation tasks. I hold Bachelor's (2018) and Master's (2020) degrees in Computer Science from the University of Washington. During my undergrad while in classes I assisted in research in the Systems Lab and TAed for various courses. During the summers I interned at Uber on the uDestroy Chaos engineering platform, and Sift (formerly SiftScience) on the DevOps team deploying Kubernetes services.

During my masters I worked in the Personal Robotics Lab, building MuSHR, a cost-effective autonomous vehicle for education and research. This led me to a job at Zordi, where we build agricultural robotics for harvesting strawberries and performing other fine-manipulation tasks.

Working at a robotics startup has allowed me to explore many different fields I had not previously been exposed to:
  • Collaborating closely with mechanical engineers to design the physical systems in conjunction with the software system.
  • Creating electrical systems for power distribution and data distribution such that our systems function reliably.
  • Designing under environmental constraints. The green houses get really hot and are not waterproof. Our networks aren't always connected.
  • Collaborating closely with Machine Learning engineers to collect the right data to enable faster training and model validation.
